Osamu Suzuki, Visionary Leader Behind Maruti-Suzuki, Passes Away at 94

  • Osamu Suzuki, the legendary figure who led Suzuki Motor Corporation for over five decades, has passed away at the age of 94. He succumbed to lymphoma on December 25, 2024.

  • Known for his pivotal role in transforming Suzuki into a global powerhouse, Osamu joined the company in 1958. His visionary leadership rescued the automaker from financial troubles in the 1970s and laid the foundation for its global success.

  • Osamu’s bold decision to partner with Maruti Udyog in 1982 revolutionized India’s automotive industry. This collaboration led to the launch of the iconic Maruti Suzuki 800 in 1983, a car that became synonymous with affordable mobility in India. Today, Maruti Suzuki holds a dominant 40% market share in the country.

  • Even after stepping down as CEO in 2016 and as Chairman in 2021, Osamu continued to serve in an advisory role, leaving an enduring legacy in the industry.
