Osamu Suzuki, Visionary Leader Behind Maruti-Suzuki, Passes Away at 94
Osamu Suzuki, the legendary figure who led Suzuki Motor Corporation for over five decades, has passed away at the age of 94. He succumbed to lymphoma on December 25, 2024.
Known for his pivotal role in transforming Suzuki into a global powerhouse, Osamu joined the company in 1958. His visionary leadership rescued the automaker from financial troubles in the 1970s and laid the foundation for its global success.
Osamu’s bold decision to partner with Maruti Udyog in 1982 revolutionized India’s automotive industry. This collaboration led to the launch of the iconic Maruti Suzuki 800 in 1983, a car that became synonymous with affordable mobility in India. Today, Maruti Suzuki holds a dominant 40% market share in the country.
Even after stepping down as CEO in 2016 and as Chairman in 2021, Osamu continued to serve in an advisory role, leaving an enduring legacy in the industry.
